Sioux City (ABC9 News) - They're already known for physical fitness and now the 185th Air Refueling Wing is being honored for taking more steps to keep its people healthy.
The 185th is Sioux City's newest Blue Zones worksite. It's a distinction they've been working on for over a year and now their military precision has paid off.
The refueling wing held a celebration on base Wednesday morning. The 185th had to meet certain requirements to get the designation, but went well beyond those. They implemented a new Wellness Advisory Committee to organize activities that promote well–being. That's in addition to many of the Blue Zones principals they already had in place.
"Being in the Military, we didn't have to accomplish the goals. It was how to tie what we were already doing in with what the Blue Zones was looking for. We have, everything we do is written down in regulation. But it wasn't, it doesn't specifically state certain things. It doesn't put it in a policy that "this is what you will do," says 2nd Lt. Marty Hogan.
Members of the 185th also have running and walking groups that meet regularly and nutrition training sessions.
