Despite the cold and wet weather, hundreds of runners kicked off their thanksgiving festivities with the annual turkey trot in downtown Des Moines.
It started e a little after 9 this morning. Runners then ran through the east village near the capitol and back.
Most runners said they were out in the cold so they could start the holiday on the right foot.
Race Director Michael Zimmerman stated that "the beauty of a thanksgiving morning event is that it gives people a reason to come out to be healthy before taking on all the calories of the day it also gives people an opportunity to show their town we have 38 states represented to me that says people are coming in to visit family"
Runners got a free tshirt and turkey trot-themed hat, as well as a free all you can eat pancake breakfast to start the thanksgiving festivities.
