A Sioux City teen accused of shooting a Sioux City Police Officer on Sunday went before a Judge for the first time Thursday afternoon.
18-year-old Isaiah Mothershed is charged with two counts of Attempted Murder and five counts of 1st Degree Robbery in connection to several incidents going back to December of 2015. On Thursday Judge Todd Hensley ordered Mothershed be held on a $300,000 bond.
According to court documents, Mothershed was involved in a home invasion back in December where a special needs child was tied up and beaten while the other occupants of the home were threatened at gunpoint.
Mothershed was also tied to four other robberies in the past two months. Police recently arrested five other people in connection to those robberies, however documents say that Mothershed played a violent role in several of those incidents.
According to police, Mothershed pistol whipped the homeowner during a robbery in the 3300 block of Pierce Street back on January 29th during a home invasion. During that incident he and two other individuals ordered the victim to his knees and forced him to open his safe at gunpoint. The three were able to steal the victim's wallet and a shotgun from that location.
A few days later, on February 2nd, court documents say that Mothershed entered a residence near Morningside College with three other people and forced the residents, including a 1-year-old child, into the basement while they stole an ounce of marijuana, multiple cell phones, and other items.
Authorities say the group next struck on February 5th when they entered a home on the 4500 block of Polk Street. During that incident documents say that Mothershed shot out the back door window of the home after the residents came home and found them inside. Police say that Mothershed fired a gun at a female homeowner who chased them as they were fleeing the residence. He's currently being charged with Attempted Murder for firing at that woman.
The very next day,on February 6th, Police say that Mothershed and others robbed another person at gunpoint after a female accomplice lured the victim to an apartment complex on Park Ave.
Finally, authorities say that in the early morning hours of February 7th, Mothershed shot a Sioux City Police Officer after pulling a pistol out of a couch at a Park Avenue Apartment. Officer Ryan Moritz was struck in the leg, and Mothershed was also shot as he struggled with officers over the weapon.
Moritz, a 13 year Police Veteran who also served with the U.S. Army in Iraq, was treated and released from Mercy Medical Center after the incident. He's expected to possibly return to work next week.
This is not the first time Mothershed has had a run-in with the Sioux City Police. In July of 2015, Mothershed was arrested for kidnapping and assaulting two men over a drug debt. Those charges were later dropped due to “lack of evidence.”
In January of this year, Mothershed also pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and was sentenced to 5 days in Jail.
Isaiah Mothershed is due back in court on February 19th at 9:00 A.M.
Attempted Murder and 1st Degree Robbery are Class "B" Felonies in the State of Iowa. If convicted, each of the seven counts against him could carry a 25 year sentence, and he would be required to serve 70 percent of that time.
