Authorities say that a family dog was the only casualty of a Wednesday morning fire in Sioux City. Crews were called out to the fire at 1405 South Rustin street around 8:00 after smoke was reported coming from the home.
No one was home at the time of the fire, but Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue tells ABC9 that a dog that was home at the time of the fire has died, however crews were able to rescue the owner's cat.
Officials believe that the fire started in the kitchen and then spread to the attic portion of the home. Fire crews cut a hole in the roof in order to better attack the flames. The home has been red tagged due to the damage.
Authorities say that two people live at the home, and the Siouxland Red Cross is assisting them.
A total of 5 fire trucks responded to the scene along with officials from Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue. Officials are still working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
