Golfers converge on Whispering Creek

Weekend tee times are filled at the local 18 hole course

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - This in not your typical February in Siouxland and people are taking advantage by getting outside. Normally Whispering Creek Golf Club usually doesn't start seeing business until mid to late March.  But when there is nice weather like Thursday they are open and most likely busy.

Whispering Creek in Sioux City had about 40-plus players Thursday with 105 tee times booked through Sunday.

Workers at Whispering Creek say it is usually tougher around this time to find a golf course that's open.
Opening in February not only brings people out but it can also attract new members.

"Everybody that comes in off the nine says it's just awesome, beautiful  out there. We have people from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota coming down to play, driving three hours to come play, they're tired of the snow," said John Peterson of Whispering Creek Golf Course.

Peterson added that his tee time book for Friday is full from open to close.

Evan Schuler and his teammates from the Northwestern College golf team saw what a beautiful day it was and made the trip down to whispering creek for a round of golf.

"Normally, there's like eight inches of snow on the ground, now there's no snow and it's 70 degrees," said Schuler. "Being able to be out here and golf, is pretty sweet. "

One thing Peterson also pointed out about Whispering Creek is no matter if it is December or January or the middle of February if they have a few nice days in a row they will be open for business.

"It's great for us. Revenue that  you don't expect this time of year, it gets people excited about getting out here, maybe drum up some new members when they can get out here and play this time of year when maybe its tougher to find a golf course that's open," said Peterson.

Whispering Creek has between 250-300 members and Thursday through Sunday, 105 tee times have already been taken down.

The higher the temperatures are over the next few days the higher the number of golfers out on the course.

"Everybody that comes in off the nine says it's just awesome, beautiful  out there," Said Peterson. "We have people from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota coming down to play, driving three hours to come play, they're tired of the snow."
