They have not been handed an invitation, but should and when, Nebraska gets a postseason football bowl game invitation the Cornhuskers will accept the offer. That's the word Tuesday from Nebraska head coach Mike Riley.
On Monday the NCAA confirmed that 5-7 teams would be eligible for selection based on Academic Progress Ratings.
The NCAA offers 80 teams a spot in a bowl game. Six wins is a requirement but since there are not enough to fill the field of bowl games as many as five 5-7 teams may get the chance to continue playing.
Some bowl onlookers say Nebraska could fill a slot at the Armed Forces Bowl Dec 29th in Fort Worth, TX. Air Force is being mentioned as a possible opponent. Big Ten teams Minnesota and Illinois also finished the season with 5-7 records and could end up in a bowl game.
Elsewhere in Cornhusker football news, former Heisman Trophy winning Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost has landed his first head coaching job. Frost was introduced at Central Florida. UCF was 0-12 this season. Frost, who guided Nebraska to the 1997 national championship most recently has served as offensive coordinator at Oregon.
