A couple of firsts in South Sioux City Monday.
It was the first day on the job for the new fire chief. He's also the city's first full-time, paid chief.
Clint Merithew has 30 years experience as a firefighter in Nebraska. He says he's excited about his first official day on the job for South Sioux City.
Merithew says, "It's overwhelming. Just knowing what the department has for growth with the brand new station that's being constructed across the street. We have a new engine that should be here next year as well. We're just looking for a lot of progress in the department to move forward for the city,"
The prior fire chiefs in South Sioux City have all been volunteers. The new chief will supervise four full-time firefighters plus a group of volunteers.
Merithew will soon be overseeing a new fire station. Construction is underway on the new multi-million dollar facility.
The new 12-thousand square foot station will have several features not found in the current station, including sleeping areas allowing crews to stay at the station 24-7.
The new station will encompass four standard drive through bays, wash bays as well as office space.
