The problem is affecting a good chunk of town and about two dozen people showed up to the South Sioux City council meeting to clear the air. They say this isn't just annoying, it's unbearable.
South sioux city residents aren't holding back. They're frustrated with what they're smelling when they step out of their door.
"It's disgusting. I sit down on the couch and the smell comes through. You walk on the carpet, the smell comes out. There's no getting rid of it," says Jonathan Goodier whose home has been affected by the smell.
The unpleasant odor is a result of sewage waste coming from Big Ox energy in a nearby industrial area.
Residents say they've been dealing with it for for weeks now and they want their elected officials to do something.
"I think we all kind of got a little bit more educated on how bad it really was," says South Sioux City Mayor Rod Koch.
Mayor Rod Koch says they'll put people up in hotels if they have to. Big Ox Energy has promised they're addressing the problem by ordering new chemicals to help get rid of the smell and machines to stop the flow of sewage from reaching residential areas.
'We're willing to take care of that and accommodate as many people that need out of their homes," says Mayor Koch.
"The outcome is good, it's just too bad that it's taken three weeks to get to this point. We've got all the residents in the neighborhood moving to Marina Inn which we don't want to do, we'd rather stay in our homes, but hopefully they can find a quick solution," says Robert Baker who house is filled with the sewage stench.
A quick fix, or not, the mayor says they'll do what they have to to make things right.
"I just want to make sure everyone is safe and in a good, clean environment every night," says Mayor Koch.
