Police are continuing their hours-long search and investigation for a man who is wanted on suspicion of assault.
South Sioux City police were called to search for the suspect where he was last seen at 11:30 Friday morning running through the corn fields across from the Covington Links Golf Course.
Although the majority of the action began around 11:30, the search actually started around 5:30 Friday morning when the suspect allegedly had a money dispute with someone while intoxicated and brandished a firearm.
Shortly after, he allegedly assaulted someone with a hammer. That victim is now in the hospital and his condition has not been released.
The suspect is described as a Caucasian male with reddish hair and was last seen wearing blue jeans, boots and a grey-blue shirt. Authorities suspect he is intoxicated and has been without sleep for several days.
Throughout the day, the investigation summoned officers from the South Sioux City Police Department, Dakota County Sheriffs, and State Troopers. A K-9 unit, drones and helicopters were also called in to assist in the search.
Although the search led to no arrests or clues to where the suspect may be, officers say they did find a 9mm gun in the corn field and some magazines in a bag that he left behind and allegedly tried to retrieve at some point Friday.
Police are still investigating and updates will be provided as more details become available.
