QB Controversy in Ames

- AMES, Iowa (ABC9 Sports)--After splitting time a year ago, Iowa State quarterbacks Grant Rohach and Sam Richardson are in a battle to earn the starting position for the Cyclones' season opener on August 30 against North Dakota State.

While the Iowa State offense was anemic at times in 2013, the final two games--with Rohach under center--saw the offense find its groove.

"I think with every rep I just got better and got more comfortable," said Rohach, "and I think kind of Kansas and West Virginia, it kind of just clicked for me."

Even though Rohach was the superior player on paper last season, both he and Head Coach Paul Rhoads understand why it is a competition.

"It's college football, you're always competing. You know, nothing's ever given to you," Rohach said.

"Sam was hurt a lot more than anyone was aware of a year ago," added Rhoads. "You don't say that because you're protecting a young man and you don't want to act like you're making excuses as you go, but Sam was nowhere close to being able to perform to his abilities."
