I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Houston in 2005. Yes, I'm pretty much as southern as you can get, so if you hear "ya'll" during the newscast, don't be alarmed!
I was bitten by the news bug in my junior year of high school, where I was introduced to the world of television in my favorite teacher's class. After learning about writing for television, public speaking and performance, I knew I wanted to be a news reporter.
In fact, I took a career test that same year that said I was going to be a television news reporter!
In 2012, I earned my degree in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in English from the University of Houston. At U of H, I served as a beat writer for the university's paper, The Daily Cougar, and started the first ever sports talk show at the student run radio station, Coog Radio. My journey to television news also continued off campus during my internships at Houston's FOX and NBC stations, where I covered everything from the protests of the George Zimmerman trial to the Houston Texans training camp. I did everything while learning from some of the most talented journalists in the state of Texas. My time at these two stations only solidified my belief that television news is where I was meant to be. After my internships, I began to love the spontaneity and the adrenaline rush that comes with news. Every day is a new adventure and a challenge that allows me to grow as a person and a journalist.
It's hard for me pick just one journalist that I look up to. I've been inspired by many that are the best at what they do, including Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon, Matt Lauer, Ted Koppel, Drew Griffin, Randy Kaye, Gary Tuchman, Brooke Baldwin, Wolf Blitzer, Robert Flores, Adam Schefter, Jeremy Schapp, Chris Brousard, and Stephen A. Smith.
When I'm not working, I love reading great non-fiction books, traveling, watching old sports documentaries, and trying out new restaurants. I'm currently learning how to cook, so I can take my reporting skills to one of my favorite channels, Food Network! I'm also very passionate about NFL and NCAA football. I've been a die-hard fan of the New Orleans Saints since I was a little kid, but when I'm not wearing my black and gold on game day, you can always see me wearing red and white on Saturdays, cheering on my University of Houston Cougars!
I'm very fortunate and privileged to do what I love for a living, and it gives me great joy to deliver the news to the wonderful community of Siouxland! If you have any story ideas, follow me on Twitter at @KCAUmhaider or email me at email@example.com
