Sioux City (ABC9 news)- Wednesday morning, ABC9 honored valedictorians from the tri-state area in the 31st "Best of the Class" celebration.

It's a tradition for local high school students, and also for some families, as there were multiple generations of recipients on hand.

"She came home and was like 'um my guidance counselor Mrs. Shae gave me this, I'm not really sure what this is,' and I just started laughing, 'I know what this is, I have done this.' They've been doing this a very long time," said Crystal Brake, who was "Best of the Class" from Wall Lake in 1990.

Crystal's daughter Kaity is valedictorian of Alta-Aurelia High School. She said it was fun to see her do many of the same things she did in 1990.

Ann Meyer graduated in 1987 from Ruthven-Ayrshire and was "Best of the Class," as well. Her son Ben now has the same title. For her it brought back many memories.

"It just brought back the memories of coming down and doing it myself. And I'm just going, 'wow I can't believe we're both having the same experience," says Ann.

"She's told me about it before and it's pretty cool to be here with her,” said her son Ben Meyer.

Ann's son Ben is valedictorian at Okoboji High.

"Best of the Class" commercials will start airing on ABC9 the second week of May at various times throughout the day. You'll be able to see them through June.
