Emerald Ash Borer Confirmed In Story County

The destructive Emerald Ash Borer has been confirmed in another Iowa county.
Story County, IA (ABC9 News) The destructive emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Story County.

Officials with the State Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced Monday that 13 counties now have confirmed cases of the insect.

Officials say two of the beetle's were found by a homeowner in Story County, and tested positive for emerald ash borer.

"The City of Story City infestation is the ninth confirmed infestation in Iowa during 2014 and we will continue to monitor EAB closely," said state entomologist Robin Pruisner of the Iowa Dept. of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

The insect is known to destroy ash tree species over a period of time. Back in February, a statewide quarantine restricting the movement if hardwood firewood, ash logs, wood chips and ash tree nursery stock.

Iowans are encouraged to not move firewood, which is the quickest way to spread an infestation.
