Musketeers Advance to Western Conference Finals

The Sioux City Musketeers came from behind to beat Omaha 4-2 Saturday night and advance to the Western Conference Finals.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (ABC9 Sports)--Jake Montgomery scored the game-winning goal and added an empty-netter as the Sioux City Musketeers advanced to the Western Conference Finals with a 4-2 win over the Omaha Lancers on Saturday night.

It's the first time the Musketeers have won a playoff series since the 2005 postseason when they lost to Cedar Rapids in the Clark Cup Finals.

After losing in overtime Friday night when they had a chance to close out the series, the Muskies got off to a slow start Saturday. Luca Frigo scored on a rebound with just 1.5 seconds remaining in the first period to give Omaha the 1-0 lead.

That score would remain until the third period.

Less than three minutes into the third, Adam Johnson fired a shot from just inside the blue line that got past Omaha netminder Hayden Hawkey to tie things up at one. But just 90 seconds later the Lancers answered as Gage Hough fired one past Musketeer goaltender Kyle Hayton to retake the lead.

Brandon Hawkins, who had two goals in the first two games of the series, fired a slap shot from just inside the blue line to tie things back up at two.

The score remained tied until just over two minutes remained. Neal Pionk fired from the point and Montgomery was there for the put-back to put Sioux City up 3-2. It was Montgomery's first goal of the postseason.

After Omaha pulled Hawkey for the extra attacker, Johnson had a chance to end the game on the open net, but fired off the pipe to keep the Lancers alive.

With just twelve seconds to go though, Montgomery connected from the neutral zone for the 4-2 final.

The Musketeers will be on the road to open the Western Conference Finals against the Waterloo Black Hawks next weekend. The Muskies are 3-3 against Waterloo this year, including two shootout wins.
