Sioux City Mother Charged With Child Endangerment After Near Drowning

20-Year-Old Accused of Doing Drugs While Leaving 10-Month-Old Child in Bathtub Unattended.
SIOUX CITY, IA (ABC9)- A 20-year-old Sioux City woman was arrested on Tuesday after her son nearly drowned while she was smoking marijuana in another room. According to court documents, Maricela Vasquez was caring for the child at an apartment on the 2800 block of W. 4th Street in Sioux City. Authorites say she left the child in a bathtub that had a foot and a half of water in it. Vasquez told police that she left the child unattended for a period of time while she went into the bedroom of the residence and closed the door in order to smoke marijuana.

When Vasquez went to check on the child, she found him under water. He was taken to Unity Point St. Luke's by ambulance and was found to have water in his lungs. The child was hospitalized until his body absorbed the water.

A search warrant was issued for Vasquez's apartment, and officers found 8 grams of marijuana. She has been charged with Felony Child Endangerment and Possession of a Controlled Substance as a result of the incident. She's currently being held in the Woodbury County Jail on a $6,000 bond. Her initial appearance date has been set for September 4th in Woodbury County Court.
